Diversity Learning Environment (DLE)
In the fall 2008, San Jose State was invited to serve in a pilot phase of this Ford Foundation-sponsored project entitled Diverse Learning Environments: Assessing and Creating Conditions for Student Success. Our campus was chosen to participate in this study because we serve a high percentage of underrepresented students, have demonstrated initial investment in diversity initiatives, and are aiming to increase its retention rates.
The primary objective of this project is to help us in addressing the needs and advancing the success of our diverse student population in order to a) develop a greater awareness about diversity, student learning, and student success both inside and outside the classroom and b) assess and develop undergraduates’ skills for work and citizenship in a pluralistic democracy.
